What the research says

The short version

Some early research suggests elderberry may ease flu, cold and other upper respiratory symptoms. A 2021 review of 5 trials found it may shorten colds, but the evidence is uncertain.

Raw or unripe berries and other parts of the elder plant contain cyanide-producing toxins that cooking removes.

About "most pills": Elderberry extract dose in a 2016 randomized air-traveler trial: 300 mg capsules, two a day (600 mg) before travel and three a day (900 mg) while travelling.
