The short version

Meta-analyses of oral turmeric or curcumin for knee osteoarthritis are initially positive, but higher quality trials are needed. NIH says it is too soon to say if turmeric helps any condition.

Highly bioavailable curcumin formulations may harm the liver.

About "most pills": Doses of curcumin or Curcuma longa extract in a 2022 arthritis meta-analysis ranged from 120 to 1,500 mg a day for 4 to 36 weeks; no single typical label dose could be verified.
