What the research says

The short version

Melatonin may help with jet lag, delayed sleep-wake phase disorder, some sleep problems in children, and anxiety around surgery.

Short-term use looks safe for most adults, but long-term safety is unknown and poison center reports about young people taking melatonin rose sharply from 2012 to 2021.

About "most pills": 2024 dose-response meta-analysis: 2 mg taken 30 minutes before bedtime is the schedule most used in clinical practice; the analysis found effects peaked near 4 mg a day.
