What the research says
The short version
A meta-analysis of 37 trials in type 2 diabetes found berberine lowered fasting glucose by 0.82 mmol/L and HbA1c by 0.63 percentage points. A 2025 meta-analysis also found lower triglycerides and LDL cholesterol.
Common side effects are digestive, such as constipation and diarrhea, and drug interactions were not verified from a government source.
About "most pills": In a 2022 meta-analysis of 37 trials, 30 trials used 0.9 to 1.5 g a day; all trial doses ranged from 0.09 to 9 g a day.
