Pleat and Heading Styles Explained: Pinch Pleat and Beyond
The top of a curtain decides how it hangs, how much room it needs and which rods it fits. A plain-English tour of TWOPAGES's header styles and which products offer them.

The short version
- Pinch, tailor, French, goblet and inverted box are pleated headers with fullness built in (2x, or 2.3x for the triple versions). Grommet and soft top need you to add fullness.
- Back tab styles cannot hang on a track, and grommet panels stack back the least, according to TWOPAGES.
- Not every product offers every header. Flynn skips goblet, Lila skips French and goblet, and Birkin Theater offers only five.

The header is the top edge of a curtain, and it quietly controls three things: how the fabric folds, how much wall it needs when open, and which rod or track it fits. TWOPAGES lists far more header styles than most shoppers expect, and not every product offers all of them. Here is a plain guide, using TWOPAGES's own header page.
The pleated family
Pleats are sewn into the top, so the curtain falls in even folds. They hang from pin hooks that slide into the pleats and clip to rings. Here is how TWOPAGES describes the main ones.
- Pinch pleat. Comes as double or triple. Default fullness is 200% for double and 230% for triple. It comes with adjustable plastic pin hooks (3.5 inches), has a 3.2 inch headband, and works on a track, traverse rod, channel rod or pole with rings. TWOPAGES says it suits medium to heavyweight fabrics.
- Tailor pleat. Like a pinch pleat, but with a larger opening at the bottom of each pleat. Double tailor pleats are spaced 5.5 to 6.5 inches apart. Suited to medium to heavyweight fabric and more formal rooms.
- French pleat. The pleats sit slightly lower than on a pinch pleat, with a 3.9 inch headband. TWOPAGES suggests heavyweight fabric.
- Goblet. The most gathered look, with a 3.5 inch goblet height and S-shaped metal pin hooks. Suited to heavyweight or thick fabric.
- Inverted box pleat. Two pieces of fabric folded over each other, with pleats 5 inches apart and metal pin hooks. It works on rods with rings and on track.
For all of these, you order the pleated width, so you do not add fullness yourself. Panel width is measured from the left end of the pleats to the right end, and the 2 inch side tucks are extra.

Tabs, pockets and grommets
- Pinch pleat with back tab. A pleated look with a 3.1 inch tab, for rods of 1.5 inches or less, hung on rings or straight on the rod. TWOPAGES suggests light to medium weight. It cannot hang on a track.
- Soft top. A 4-in-1 header that can hang from a hook belt, clip rings, a rod pocket or a back tab. Suggested for light to medium weight fabric. You add fullness yourself: TWOPAGES recommends 1.5 to 2 times the rod width.
- Grommet. Metal rings sewn into the top, with a 1.6 inch inside diameter. TWOPAGES says grommet panels have the least stack back of any heading. Fullness is also yours to add.
TWOPAGES also sells ripple fold, a track-only style, which we leave out here because none of the products in this guide list it.

Which products offer which
The table below shows the pleat styles on each product page as captured on 2026-10-22. The Liz, Jawara and Patti pages list the same nine pleat styles as Liz Linen Blackout.

How to choose
Start with the rod. If you have a track, skip the back tab. If you already own a thin rod and like a simple look, back tab or grommet may suit you.
Then think about the wall. If wall space beside the window is tight, grommet stacks back least, and pleated styles stack more. TWOPAGES says stack normally runs 20 to 30 percent of the ordered width and varies by fabric and header.
Then match weight and header. TWOPAGES lists pinch pleat as suited to medium to heavyweight cloth. Yet its own Flynn page, at a lightweight 90 gsm, lists pinch pleat first, so treat the "suitable for" lines as guidance, not a rule. If you are torn, TWOPAGES sells an 8-in-1 headers mock-up sample ($49.99) that shows eight pleat styles on one panel, 35 by 25 inches. It notes that actual French pleat headers run about 1 inch longer than the sample.
Finally, mind the hardware. Pinch and tailor pleats come with plastic pin hooks. Goblet and inverted box come with metal ones. Rings are not included, and you need one ring per pleat.

Featured picks and who should skip them
Lila 100% Blackout Drape Pleated
Six pleat styles at 280 gsm with a stated 100% shading rate. The page describes it as a pinch pleated blackout drape.
Who should skip it: You want goblet or French pleats. Neither is listed on the Lila page.
Flynn Airy Lightweight Sheer Curtain Pleated
A 90 gsm sheer with eight pleat styles, from $49. A light panel for a pleated look.
Who should skip it: You want a goblet header (not listed), or any shading. It is a sheer.
Isabella Heavyweight Cotton Drapery Pleated
The widest header choice here: nine pleat styles plus Soft Top and Grommet, at 500 gsm.
Who should skip it: You have a light rod or little wall space. A 500 gsm pleated panel is heavy and bulky when stacked.
