The short version

  • Keep bedside surfaces reserved for just three items: lamp, water, and reading book.
  • Move phone chargers to another room to stop late-night notification checking.
  • Use drawer dividers to store lip balms, glasses, and notebooks out of view.

The nightstand is the last thing your eyes see before turning off the lights and the first thing you see upon waking. When nightstands become catch-all surfaces for charging cords, work memos, water tumblers and unopened mail, they signal unfinished chores right when the brain needs peace.

The three-item nightstand rule

To establish an uncluttered visual field that invites relaxation, limit your nightstand top to three functional, attractive essentials: a warm bedside reading lamp, a small ceramic water carafe with glass, and whatever paper book you are currently reading. Everything else should be stored out of sight inside drawers or removed from the bedroom entirely.

Removing electronic chargers

Keeping phone charging cables dangling off the bedside table guarantees temptation to check emails or scroll social feeds during midnight awakenings. Plug phones and tablets into a charging station in the kitchen or hallway. Swap your phone alarm for a simple analog clock with a warm backlight.
