Lékué Rice Cooker

As a South Asian, rice is a staple in my culture; as a dietitian, it is not a staple in my diet. I can’t remember the last time I made rice at home, but that could be because I find it a pain to cook. For me, cooking rice on the stove is just time-consuming and boring, and then I think, “Well, I am spending 25 to 30 minutes and the nutritional benefit is not really there, so what’s the point?”

Enter the Lékué Rice Cooker. I’ve never seen a product like this before and, frankly, I found it hard to believe. It’s got a silicone-based lid, is BPA-free, and is microwavable. I must have read the instructions about five times before I was ready to embark on the journey of microwave rice cooking! In reality, it is super-simple to use. I followed the instructions exactly: add rice, add water, close with the lid, microwave. In 12 minutes, I had cooked rice that tasted the way it should.

For the novice chef, this is a great tool. While the rice is in the microwave, you can whip up a stir-fry or a delicious complementary dish to consume with the rice. Also, this product doesn’t just cook rice, but also couscous, quinoa, farro and other grains. Based on my personal experience, I don’t really have anything negative to say. I think this Lékué dish could inspire home cooks to attempt cooking and more often: and it allows you to make as much or as little of the grain as desired.

I think this is also a great product for students. College students want meals that are easy that won’t contribute to the dreaded “freshman 15.” This Lékué Rice Cooker is great for those who are pressed for time, want to eat healthy, like to eat with friends, and who are relatively new to cooking.

I really have only one thing to say: As a dietitian, I advise keeping portion control in mind when consuming these carbohydrates. It’s super-easy to get carried way and cook an excessive portion…only to eat it all!
