Curtain Fabric Weight in Plain Words: 245, 350 and 500 GSM
GSM is a number on every curtain page, but what does it change in your room? A plain guide to weight, fibre, drape, light and warmth, using TWOPAGES's real specs.
In this guide
HealthStylz Curtain Guides explains fabric weight density (GSM) and textile compositions across TWOPAGES custom drapes to guide homeowners toward optimal window insulation and room illumination. Fabric density spans from ultra-sheer Flynn polyester at 90 GSM (2.7 oz/yd²) up to winter-grade Isabella cotton blend at 500 GSM (14.7 oz/yd²). Medium-weight 248 GSM Patti Belgian flax linen and 274 GSM Jawara linen-cotton weaves offer 100% natural fiber breathability that gently filters natural sunlight into living areas. While 350 GSM Liz Linen Drape provides a structured architectural fall at accessible pricing, fabric weight alone does not determine room darkness; Lila at 280 GSM delivers certified 100% blackout through a specialized light-blocking core, whereas 500 GSM Isabella requires an optional blackout liner to achieve total darkness. Lined heavyweight fabrics reduce convective winter drafts across glass panes, supporting indoor thermal comfort and balanced circadian rest cycles.
Key takeaways
- GSM means grams per square metre of fabric. Higher means heavier cloth and a more structured fall, but it does not tell you how dark the room will be.
- Darkness comes from shading: Lila at 280 gsm states 100%, while Isabella at 500 gsm offers linings from Unlined to a stated 100%.
- No warmth figure is stated for any of these fabrics. TWOPAGES's liner guide says liners can insulate, and some linings list their own weight and shading rate.

Every curtain page shows a weight in gsm. It sounds technical, but it is just grams per square metre of cloth. Think of it like paper: a thin sheet and a heavy card can both be white, but they hang, block and feel very differently. Here is what the numbers on TWOPAGES's pages mean in daily life.
Three weights worth comparing
About 245 to 248 gsm. The Patti flax linen is 248 gsm (7.3 oz/yd²), and the MS. Maverick Muse print is 245 gsm; both pages call this medium weight. Patti's page says the medium-weight linen lets natural light filter through softly. It also says flax linen gets a structured drape after memory training, which means you shape the folds in the first days.

350 gsm. The Liz Linen Drape is 350 gsm (10.3 oz/yd²), which the page calls heavyweight. It is 10% linen and 90% polyester, and the page lists OEKO-TEX certification, an anti-wrinkle finish and easy maintenance. That gives you a firm, hanging fall for less than the all-linen options, at a $59.99 starting price.

500 gsm. The Isabella is 500 gsm (14.7 oz/yd²). Its page says the heavyweight cotton blend forms soft, structured folds. It is also the heaviest panel in this guide, so plan for a sturdy rod, and expect it to take more effort to pull by hand. TWOPAGES lists pull wands in its hardware menu.
For contrast, the Flynn sheer is just 90 gsm (2.7 oz/yd²). The page describes a fluid drape that lets sunlight in while gently veiling the room.

Weight is not darkness
This is the biggest mix-up. A heavy curtain is not automatically a dark one. Lila is 280 gsm and states a 100% shading rate. Isabella is a much heavier 500 gsm, but its page offers linings from Unlined to Privacy (60%), Room Darkening (75%) and Blackout (100%). The shading numbers belong to the lining you pick, not to the weight of the face fabric. If you want a dark bedroom, look for the words "Shading Rate" and a percentage.
What about warmth?
No warmth figure, such as an insulation rating, is stated on these product pages. TWOPAGES's liner guide does say liners can help insulate windows against heat loss in cool months and heat transfer in summer, and describes its dense triple-weave 220 gsm lining as adding extra thermal insulation. Some linings list their own weight: the Liz page shows an Insulation Blackout Thermal Combo at 315 gsm with a stated 100% shading rate. In practice, a heavier, lined panel with a wide cover and a long drop is the setup most likely to feel warmer by the window, but that is our reading, not a TWOPAGES number.

Fibre in plain words
- Linen (Patti is 100% Belgian flax linen; Jawara is 73% linen, 27% cotton). Natural fibre with a textured look.
- Cotton blends (Isabella is 24% cotton, 76% polyester). Part natural, part man-made, with a denser feel at 500 gsm.
- Polyester (Lila and Flynn are 100% polyester; Birkin velvet is 100% polyester velvet). Man-made fibre, used here for both sheers and heavy blackout cloth.
- Linen look (Liz at 10% linen). The look and texture of linen with mostly polyester content.
Care also changes with fibre. The Lila page lists a hand wash cycle, wipe clean or dry clean, no bleach and no hot water. Check the Care tab for the curtain you pick. We did not capture care details for every product.

A quick way to choose
If you want soft light and a relaxed look, start near 245 to 275 gsm. If you want a firm drape that hangs straight, look at 350 gsm. If you want a weighty, formal fall and have a strong rod, look at 500 gsm. Then add a lining only for the amount of light you want to stop. Measure your rod first, and use TWOPAGES's weight calculator to check the panel weight. Offers change often: see the official TWOPAGES sale page. We do not list codes.

Questions people ask
What does GSM mean on a curtain?
Grams per square metre of fabric. TWOPAGES also lists ounces per square yard for most products, for example 350 gsm is 10.3 oz/yd² and 500 gsm is 14.7 oz/yd².
Does a heavier curtain block more light?
Not by weight alone. Shading comes from the lining or weave, and is only a number when the page states a Shading Rate. Lila states 100%; Isabella lists linings from Unlined to 100%.
Will heavy curtains keep my room warmer?
No warmth rating is stated on these pages. TWOPAGES's liner guide says liners can help insulate, and some linings list a weight, such as 315 gsm for one combo lining.
Do heavier curtains need a stronger rod?
Yes, plan for it. TWOPAGES has a curtain weight calculator for panel weight, hardware not included. Check your rod's load rating against that figure.
